Liz removed her theatrical makeup, substituted the heavy cosmetics she normally used to mask the last of the bruises, and then slipped into jeans and a pink shirt.

Outside the center, Roy opened the car’s passenger door and made a sweeping gesture. “My lady.” His grin was like a tot’s opening a special gift from Santa.

He jogged around the hood of the car and folded his lanky frame into the driver’s seat. His hand hesitated on the ignition key as he turned and studied her. “You never told me about the dream you had the day of the festival.” With a flick of his wrist, the powerful car purred to life.

She brushed a hand across her brow. The likelihood of dreams that predicted the future had challenged her youthful imagination. Had her father known, he would have shaken his fist and berated her for such an anti-religious tenet. “I’d rather forget. Must have been a lapse of judgment believing a nightmare could be a precursor of things to come.”

“If you share the details,” Roy murmured in a low, liquid tone, “you’ll feel better. Secrets can be a burden.”

Ouch. If he only knew. But a dream wasn’t a secret. “I was running through a forest when an old woman, dressed in funky bright-colored clothes, raced ahead of me and cleared a path of brambles and tree limbs. I mean, how can that be? An older woman running faster than me?” Liz frowned. She didn’t want to repeat the woman’s words. But maybe, if she voiced the scary stuff, it would be easier to cope with the dream. “Anyway, I tripped and fell. She picked me up. That’s when she warned that the men chasing me would kill me.”

Roy’s eyebrows lifted a fraction as he cocked his head.

“She said my friends were in danger, too. Then the nightmare faded, and I awoke.” Liz shrugged. “The same dream first occurred at Gloria’s house. If it’s a warning, I can’t live my life looking over my shoulder, waiting for something bad to happen.”

“A sensible decision.”

“Being sensible doesn’t always cut it, though.” She turned and searched his face for a hint of reassurance. “Have you ever had crazy, scary dreams?”

He dipped his head her way. “Sure, but not in recent years.”

He steered the vehicle down a long driveway, the wheels kicking up gravel behind them. Ahead, an old ranch house appeared. The building sorely needed a paint job and a new roof, while the yard around it was overgrown with waist-high grass that waved in a light breeze.

Liz lifted her head and sniffed. Wildflowers, pine, and clean fresh air. The scene, one of bucolic tranquility, eased her anxious heart and brought peace. She could live in a place like this for the rest of her life.

Pebbles crunched beneath their sneakers as they made their way to the house, maneuvered up the rickety steps and crossed the wide, wrap-around porch.

Roy pulled a key from his pocket and opened the door to a good-sized living room filled with furniture from bygone days.
